Family Friendly Garden

Design for a south-facing family garden with considerable height difference. The terrace was too small after a conservatory extension.

The owners, a doctor and teacher couple with three children wanted a spacious terrace for six to eight people and a secluded corner in the rear area. There should be integrated a lawn for the children and an area for a herbs and vegetables garden. An existing shed should be screened, the existing maple and the already ingrown hedge to the neighbor should be preserved.

In this design, it was important to move the existing height difference backwards to give the conservatory more space and a good access to the terrace, which has been considerably expanded to provide plenty of space for family and friends. The lawn is now level and big enough to kick a few balls into a soft goal wall. In front of the shed are several raised beds for gardening. This area is entered by a rose- covered arch and an evergreen magnolia provides a stunning feature to look at the whole year round. At the left back you will find a pergola covered round corner, the secret place from where you can overlook the garden. The plants and the paving were kept in the Mediterranean style.
